When we first closed on our home, I knew that I could not move in and feel at peace if I left the atrocious paint colors that were on the wall. In the master bedroom alone there were 3 paint colors: puke green, poop brown and my pale @$$ (sorry for the language, but they were that bad). There was every shade of brown, purple, orange and green. Naturally, damage control was throwing up my favorite shade of white ASAP. Now that we’ve settled in, I have started dialing in on my favorite cozy paint colors for living room, bedroom, front room… Ok, basically the entire house, but we’re focusing on the living room first.
We have officially been in our house for a year and it is starting to feel like our home. One major thing to help a house feel like a home, number ONE, is paint color. What works for you and your house, likes, dislikes, may be different than someone else. That being said, these are MY FAVORITES that I have used in my own home, clients’ homes or that I have on my list of paint colors to use.
I have whites, grays and some color – anything that, to me, feels like it could create a warm and cozy color palette. Basically we want your living room (or any space for that matter) to feel like it’s giving you a hug. You should feel settled, comfortable and warm.
At the end of my list I will also give some tips on painting if you are attempting to paint on your own.
So, If you’re interested in the colors that I like that feel super cozy and warm then read on! And thank you for being even the slightest bit interested in what I have to say 🙂 You readers mean the world to me!
This post is all about cozy colors for living room.
Cozy Colors For Living Room
White Dove – Benjamin Moore
This color is so universal and such a beautiful warm white. This is the color that I painted my entire house before we moved in. A nice warm white acts as the perfect canvas for your home by adding that creamy base as a starting point for the rest of your decor choices. One thing you will want to consider before choosing this color (or any warm white for that matter) is making sure you do a sample and check it at all times of day. Sometimes west-facing houses can make warm whites look very yellow and that ain’t what we want!
Worldly Gray – Sherwin Williams
Gosh, this is such a dreamy color. If you’re someone that wants to stray away from white, but maybe isn’t bold enough to do a color or something too dramatic then this is the choice for you. This color looks amazing with brass accents and natural wood tones. I know that many people do not think of gray as a warm color, but this choice paired with the right decor pieces is the perfect balance of warm and modern.
Polo Blue – Benjamin Moore
If you have been looking at blue paint, you have probably seen Hale Navy about a million times. For me, I like Polo Blue even better. It is deep and beautiful without looking TOO blue. Honestly, totally underrated in my opinion and the warm undertones make it so perfect.
Urbane Bronze – Sherwin Williams
This color exploded onto the scene. I swear, I have seen so many people use this color lately and for good reason. It is the most perfect, warm, moody slice of heaven that is not black or brown but the perfect combo of the two. A beautiful warm hug that evokes a sense of calm – exactly what we’ve been looking for!
Gauntlet Gray – Sherwin Williams
This was a color that I stumbled across while working on a client’s house. It is such a beautiful warm gray that works in so many spaces. Gauntlet Gray is a great exterior paint color, but also would be beautiful in a living room if you like a moodier vibe. It truly is a classic.
Eden Green – Scout & Nimble
This green is absolute perfection. It is warm, earthy and provides the perfect neutral backdrop with the perfect POP. Here it is shown on kitchen cabinets, which would be GORG, but this would also be great in a living room to create that cozy inviting space. It is one of my favorite earth tone paint colors for a living room. I think this would look especially good if you have board and batten, wainscoting or some detailing on your wall.
Porpoise – Sherwin Williams
This color I believe is totally underrated. I had not even heard of it or seen this color until recently when I was looking for a color for a client’s home. This color is BEAUTIFUL! It is a gorgeous, deep gray/brown. This color will absolutely give you that cozy feeling you’re looking for. Imagine this color on shiplap – OMG… STUNNING!
Most of these paint colors that I have recommended have warm undertones and easily create a cozy feel. However, if you are choosing to go with a cooler tone paint color, make sure that you bring the warmth in other ways (decor, wood tones, patinaed furniture). By doing this you can still create a warm and cozy space.
Before I go I wanted to give a few tips if you are going to tackle painting your living room (or any room for that matter) yourself.
Hot Tips
- Paint colors can look EXTREMELY different depending on the amount of light you get in your house and the time of day. I STRONGLY suggest testing your paint at all times of day. I would even suggest keeping up a swatch for at least a few days. You need to live with it. For instance, I picked up this color Black fox and wanted to use it in our bathroom and possibly in our kitchen. In our kitchen it looked SO BROWN but in our bathroom is looked much more gray and beautiful. TEST, TEST, TEST!
- Speaking of testing – make sure that you have a large enough sample. Don’t be stingy on the amount of paint you put on the wall. If this scares you, there is a great company called samplize.com. They will send you large stickers in any paint color that you can easily stick on the wall and then take down once you are finished. I do believe Sherwin Williams offer these kind of samples for their more popular colors, too. If you are going to paint the sample straight on the wall MAKE SURE that you are putting the sample on a white base. If you are putting the sample on a colored wall it can definitely alter the integrity of the color.
- USE TAPE! There’s been a time or two when I was feeling pretty darn confident (and lazy) and did not want to tape up my space. Trust me, I freaking HATE prep work, but just do it. It will make your lines so clean and really give you a more professional looking paint job. THE BEST PAINTERS TAPE HANDS DOWNNNNN IS GREEN FROG TAPE! Trust me. I have tried every painter’s tape in the book and green frog tape is the only one that will give you clean lines and peel off easily. You can buy it HERE on amazon.
- Buy the correct paintbrushes for your paint. Natural bristle brushes are typically good for oil based paints. Synthetic brushes are typically good for latex paints, stain and poly. Foam brushes are good for cabinets and trim. Rollers are also necessary and usually the more textured your wall, the thicker the nap. When painting a room I would buy a starter set which will come with brushes, rollers and a paint pan. This one HERE on amazon is great.
- My last piece of advice : in between coats, store your paintbrushes in the fridge! This is a little hack that has been SO helpful! When my husband and I were looking at houses, we opened the fridge and saw nothing in there except a paintbrush still covered in paint (wrapped in saran wrap, of course). I did not understand why it was in there and then a lightbulb went off. If it’s too cold, paint doesn’t dry! It was such a great AHA moment. I can’t tell you how many brushes I ruined or wasted because paint dried up on them or I didn’t clean them correctly in between coats. This tip will SAVE YOU!!!
That wraps it up, guys! Hopefully you enjoyed my recommendations and this post helped you in some way. At the very least, maybe you got a laugh out of my paint descriptions at the beginning of this post (haha)! Until next time, cozy friends.
