It is no secret that I am a fan of cozy home decor. So, naturally the Christmas season is when I feel my home really comes alive. Over the years I have come up with some tried and true cozy Christmas decor ideas that will help transform your home from basic to a warm and cozy Christmas dream. If your a cozy queen like me – you won’t want to miss this!
As a lover of all things cozy, a cozy Christmas aesthetic is pretty important to me. My home is at it’s best when it is decorated for Christmas and I have been collecting cozy Christmas decorations for about ten years now. While the decorations may change from year to year, there are some core rules that I like to stick by to achieve a hallmark like vibe.
I promise you that if you apply these fundamentals to your home, you can easily get that cozy Christmas look that so many of us are after.
This post is all about cozy Christmas decor ideas.
1. Trees, trees, trees
We have 2 trees on our main level. One is more va va voom and the other is full of all the special ornaments and handmade treasures. While these trees are super different, there is one thing that they have in common – they are perfectly imperfect. They are not perfectly adorned with ribbon and perfectly placed ornaments. No, what makes them special and charming is that they are a little messy – from cute little helpers grabbing bunches of tinsel and putting it on the tree in a ball. And those construction paper ornaments that hold so much more than any regular ornament ever could. That’s what we love. And I’ll tell ya what, those humble, messy, memory-made trees add the coziest touch that you could ever add to your home at Christmastime.
2. Lights
This might be the most important aspect of creating a cozy space – LIGHTS! While you can definitely just grab some lights off of the shelf with little to no thought, there is one thing I highly recommend and that is WARM lights. Warm lights are going to create that soft glow that really sets the mood for a cozy space. The bright white or the LED lights are not going to give off the same effect. So if you are going for cozy Christmas ambiance, the warm lights are definitely what you want.
Obviously lights are going to go on the tree but I like adding fairy lights to the village, lights to the fireplace mantle, and little string lights to the some of the small trees around the house. During this time of year we rarely have the overhead lights on and just have the house lit by the twinkling lights and candles. These flameless candles below are by far my FAVORITE and look so real. Best part is they are from amazon!
3. A Collected Christmas
There is something truly special about creating a collected home. And this is true at Christmas, too. Adding pieces with a little bit of patina or a story can make your house feel so much cozier. Some of my favorite Christmas pieces are antiques: the ornaments I found at a garage sale for 50 cents that have the PERFECT patina; my vintage santa mugs that are perfectly worn; and my “slippery sid” sled that was like finding gold. I like finding pieces at Target and Homegoods, too, but what makes these pieces so special is that I know they are truly unique.
So, where do you find these amazing pieces? Thrift stores, antique stores, garage sales and even on resale sites like ebay and mercari. There really is nothing like treasure hunting for antiques.
4. Handmade (One of my favorite cozy Christmas decor ideas)
I know not everyone likes to get crafty, but when you make something for your home you are creating a memory as well. In turn, you feel more connected to your home. It could turn into a fun tradition you do with your kids or your partner every year. Whether it be dry orange garland or clay ornaments, you start stepping away from that cookie cutter Christmas and into something that is more cozy and more meaningful to you. There are so many great cozy Christmas decor ideas that are handmade – pinterest is going to be your best friend here. So, go on and start creating those memories!
5. Greenery + Natural Elements (One of my favorite cozy Christmas decor ideas)
There are so many ways that people decorate for Christmas. Some homes are more glam, some are more retro, some eclectic, and some traditional; But, in all of the homes that look REALLY cozy one common thread throughout is that they all incorporate a lot of natural elements.
Adding natural elements can be done in a few different ways. My favorite way to do this is by adding greenery throughout the house. I have some fake and some real and let me tell ya, the real is where it is at! The fragrance that you get by bringing natural greens into the home is unmatched. We also always have birch logs or wood burning logs. Some other good ideas are dried orange slices, strung cranberries, acorns, or pinecones.
Natural elements tend to create a more calming environment which is great for Christmastime when so many of want to unwind, relax and be with our loved ones. This is why it is one of my cozy Christmas decor ideas.
6. Warm/Neutral Color Palette
When I am decorating, in general, I usually gravitate towards a warmer color palette. I decorate for Christmas with the same mentality in mind. Neutrals and warmer colors naturally lend themselves to a cozier home. I am not saying that you can’t achieve a cozy home with an icy blue and purple color palette, but in my opinion it is easier to achieve by sticking to neutrals and subtle pops of color.
I have a lot of whites, creams, brass, wood accents, and greenery as my base. I like to add some amber elements and some pops of red.
I also want to add that I do put out a decent amount of Christmas decor, but because it is a more neutral palette it won’t smack you in the face as hard as a really punchy palette might do. It is important (with any design) to give your eye a break. Some negative space or breathing room within your decorations is nice. And always remember that subtle touches go a long way.
7. Pillows and Blankets
This is more a universal word to the wise: your house will not be cozy if a blanket/pillow isn’t within arms reach. This is expecially true at Christmastime or those cold winter months. You want your guests to feel as if they could curl up on your couch and watch a movie. In fact, my sister said those exact words to be the other day when she was over and I thought, “mission accomplished!”
My all time favorite blankets are the faux fur ones. I know people are obsessed with the barefoot dreams ones and dupes for it, but the weight that a faux fur blanket has can just send you off to dreamland. I’ll link a few good ones below.
That wraps up my 7 cozy Christmas decor ideas. I hope this list was helpful, and if not, I hope at least you could take away some inspiration from the imagery. I love injecting my house with loads of coziness and hopefully you can feel it through this screen! Thanks for checking out my page. Until next time, friends!
