This post is all about how to make your home cozy!
How to Make your Home Cozy
1. Lighting
This to me is one of the most important first steps in creating a cozy atmosphere and I feel like it is often overlooked. Lighting is so important and creates the warmth that you need in a space to really make it feel cozy and comfortable. I would say the number one thing that is necessary is getting the correct type of bulb. You DO NOT want to get a cool light bulb. I HIGHLY recommend getting a soft white or warm white lightbulb when trying to create a cozy and inviting space (some great choices are linked below).
I also recommend having at least one dimmable light source. This way you are easily able to adjust the light flow in your room. For instance, if you are having a party you might want your space to be a little brighter than if you’re having a movie night in with your husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend. I love these dimmable table lamps from Ikea. They are the perfect touch for a cozy home.
2. Blankets and Pillows
I think it goes without saying that blankets and pillows is one of the MOST IMPORTANT elements of a cozy home. I honestly don’t think you can have enough if you are truly going for the comfiest, coziest vibes possible. Not only does it add texture (we’ll talk more about that later) but they are functional and a necessity for cuddling up on the couch with the family for movie nights. One of my favorite affordable blanket options is this cable knit blanket from target. So Cozy! Target’s casaluna collection is also AMAZING and a little more expensive than the one linked but still afforable. This pillow cover from amazon is also one of my favorite amazon finds! It’s amazing quality. Some of my favorite cozy home decor brands (that are afforable) are Target, Amazon, H&M, Etsy, and Zara. (click on pics to purchase)
3. Layers
Notice in almost every single picture that exudes a cozy vibe, there are layers and layers of pillows, blankets, rugs, lighting, etc. This layering effect that totally embodies coziness is essential when nailing down this look. There isn’t really a technique to this. Creating a cozy space is very relaxed and not meant to be overly thought out or planned but it is super important when making your home cozy, so, it has to be noted. Below are images that are spot on for a cozy look. Remember, effortlessness is key here!
4. Candles
There is something about adding candles to a space that instantly makes it feel cozy. The subtle amount of light they put off is the perfect ambiance for a cozy house aesthetic. Candles themselves are awesome but if you’re like me, scented candles take it up a notch.
Picture this – someone walks into your house and you have your favorite candle lit – let’s say it smells like a homemade apple pie or fresh laundry – they are immediately going to feel more at home. It’s something about certain scents that does something in our brain (hello oxytocin!) that immediately makes us feel more relaxed and at home. Amiright or amiright?
Bath and body works of course has a ton of great scents. Some of my favorites are the eucalyptus ones from their aromatherapy line, Paris Cafe, Marshmallow fireside, bergamot waters and so many other seasonal ones.
I’ve also linked a couple of my favorites from Target below:
Or if you are not a fan of real candles or have curious kids (like me!) these flameless ones are a great option and look so real!! I love the amber glass, too – those are totally my vibes one hundred percent. And the best part? You can control them with a remote control! Purchase them here!
5. Textures
Now, this is SUPER important. Adding different textures to a space creates depth and warmth. Think things like sheepskin, a deep pile rug or antique furniture that has time worn patina. Of course you can still have a cozy space with brand new things but for me, something about the story that an antique piece carries with it creates a dimension that cannot be store bought. Adding character to a space in these specific ways is what is going to make your home cozy.
6. Rugs and Textiles
I know I touched on rugs in the section about texture but rugs play such an important role in a space that they need their own section. A natural fiber rug or deep pile rug are going to bring more depth to your space and instantly make it feel homier.
Rugs can be expensive but if you are on a budget layering smaller rugs is a solution in bringing that warmth on a budget.
When your feet are on the floor they should feel happy 🙂 so throw those babies everywhere you are walking! Kitchen? YES! Kitchen runners are great and add so much personality to a space that might be hard to add coziness to.
Bathrooms? DUH! Try a vintage rug or if that’s not your vibe buying an old rug there are great dupes out there from wayfair and world market.
Even if you have carpet, you can totally add rugs to create a more cohesive and cozy space.

7. Plants/Foilage
Having plants in your space is going to bring some life. No worries if you don’t have a green thumb – plenty of stores offer AMAZING life like plants that literally require nothing more than a light dusting every once in a while. Places like Michaels, hobby lobby and amazon also have great stems both faux and dried. Some great options from amazon are below!
8. Color
Color is very important in our daily lives. Certain colors make us feel different emotions. I like to stick to a pretty neutral color scheme because it brings a sense of calm and peace. Some of my favorite colors are Revere Pewter, Balboa mist, White Dove, and Gauntlet Gray. Of course you can add more color in your home if you’d like. I love pops of green or blue but I tend to stay towards colors with a warmer undertone. Hale Navy or Pewter green are colors that I have used before and really enjoy. I also like to add pops of black as I feel it really grounds a space.
9. STUFF!
This may seem like a silly thing to make your home cozy but honestly, what makes YOUR HOME feel most like YOU is your things that are special and dear to you. Forget the fads, trends, brands.. blah, blah, blah – what your home needs that is most important are those items that have a story that is special to you and your family. Those seashells you found on vacation or that old clock you found while thrifting with your mom. Those are the things that will instantly make your home feel cozy and perfectly you.
Other things you can incorporate are pieces of artwork (bonus points if they are special to you), BOOKS, BOOKS and more BOOKS! Isn’t there something about a cozy home library feel? Add some baskets for added texture but also storage (especially if you have kids!). I love a trinket here and there from family trips and travels.
Bottom line here is sometimes things can’t be bought and what is going to make your house feel like a cozy home are the memories that you bring to it. That might sound corny but hey! that’s me, I guess! haha!
Here are some items i LOVE from amazon:
